Choosing a collection type

Documentation / Collections and content trees

A collection determines how a group of pages is organized and presented. Choose its type for the way readers need to browse, rather than for the appearance of one listing block.

Compare the two types

Sequential (tree hierarchy) suits documentation, resource libraries, and other material with a deliberate reading order. Its root file records parent-child relationships and sibling order. Tree navigation can display those relationships, while listing presets can present items as cards or lists.

Dated (blog/changelog) suits posts and updates. Its listings normally show newer publication dates first. The collection settings also offer Enable RSS feed. A dated collection still contains editable pages; it is not a separate text-only publishing system.

Make the choice

Open the collections screen and choose New collection. Enter Name and Base path, then choose Type. For example, a reference library might use a sequential collection at /resources; dated announcements might use /news.

The collection type and a listing's design preset are separate decisions. A card layout does not turn a tree into a blog, and choosing a sidebar preset does not create missing parent-child relationships.

Check the result

Create a small set of representative pages, including a branch if hierarchy is required. Confirm their URLs, order, and listing output before adding the full library. Review availability on the pages themselves. Collection membership does not automatically make content public or add it to the site's main navigation.

See Blogs for publication dates and Pages and navigation for access and navigation settings.
